OUR

NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH

PROGRAM

Walsh Acres Neighbourhood Watch Committee

Neighbourhood Watch, A Secure Lifestyle!

NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH is a program aimed at reducing crime in our community.  It involves getting to know one’s neighbours and introducing them to the concept of participating in Neighbourhood Watch–that is, good neighbours working together, alert to the potential of crime and willing to look out for one another’s interests.

Neighbours working together through Neighbourhood Watch can combat crime in their area the most effective way - before it starts.

NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH provides a means of reducing the opportunity for crime to occur, through the active participation of citizens in crime prevention.  Citizens are taught to make their homes less inviting as a target for thieves; how to participate in Operation Identification, making their personal property less desirable to burglars; and how to be alert to suspicious activity in their neighbourhood.

Very few people are in a position to protect their homes and property all of the time.  Vacation, business and shopping trips or even an evening out will leave homes unattended and vulnerable to theft.  The NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH PROGRAM also helps to co-ordinate the efforts of the Police and the community in tracking down criminals.

Strong community involvement is encouraged because neighbourhood unity can deter crime.  Neighbours joined together do help correct situations that threaten their peace and safety.

Organization of Neighbourhood Watch:

Police Coordinator - Member of Regina Police Service.

Steering Committee - Walsh Acres Neighbourhood Watch group.

Area Leader – Walsh Acres is organized into six Areas.

Block Captains – There are up to 32 Block Captains in each area who communicate with their Leader.  The Block Captain has one of the most important functions in the Committee Program by assisting  the Watch activities of their neighbours to be aware of their yards and houses and to keep an eye out for suspicious activities.  Most Block Captains have from 5 to 8 members in their Block.

Neighbourhood Watch Committee members meet every 2nd month at George Lee School at 7:30 p.m. to receive reports from Block Captains and Area Leaders and discuss ways and means to keep the community constantly informed and working together to prevent crime in the community.  These meetings are open to the public and all citizens are welcome to attend all meetings with comments, suggestions and recommendations.

The Annual Meeting of Walsh Acres Neighbourhood Watch will be held at  7:30 p.m.  November 17th, 2009 at George Lee School Staff Room, please use the south entrance door on the east side of the school.  Elections will be held for all Executive positions.  Please use this opportunity to get to know how your community committee functions, and if you can, perhaps volunteer to help improve security and good living on the streets where we live!
